Unless your associated audio files are saved in the project folder, sending your saved DAW project file will result in an empty shell — and a lot of head-scratching when your collaborator opens the project and sees that all the audio is marked as missing. Some DAWs pool audio files by copying them into your project folder automatically when you drag and drop them onto an audio track.

Others allow you to work with audio files wherever they are on your system — to avoid duplicating the same file multiple times on your hard drive — but give you the opportunity to save them into a project folder when you click Save As, or if your DAW features a Share, Archive or Backup function. The list of potential assets to keep in mind goes on. You may even have to share the impulse responses you created while working in depth with convolution-reverb plug-ins. How well does Pro Tools play with Cubase? MIDI files can contain much more than just note information. Any MIDI controller information can be contained in a MIDI file, plus pitch-bend data and more, as well as your given instrument name for each individual part.

If not, are you able to open the newer project in the earlier version? Is your computer capable of running many more plug-ins than theirs? If you add a long chain of effects to your project, will your collaborator be able to open it? Broadly speaking, your DAW is the core of a musical command chain.

It controls all of the resources that exist within your project: it captures MIDI events and organises them on a timeline; it provides you with the capacity to host software plug-ins; and it lets you communicate with your audio interface. Your DAW runs the show. Remember though, that under its command are a series of resources and assets that may be tied to your project but are not necessarily exclusive to it.

That Emotional Piano library you like so much is made by a third-party manufacturer, in this instance SoundIron. It exists outside of this one. How about those audio files that you brought in from another project and sit on another hard drive chained to your system? The file type that most naturally lends itself to collaborative workflows is the WAV. To make your project as compatible as possible and allow your collaborator the greatest level of flexibility, you should render each file on its own.

In this short video, Brendan and Robin demonstrate how simple it is to begin streaming audio from Logic Pro X to a remote connection.

Only one side of the connection needs to have a DAW open – the “broadcaster” – and they simply place the Sessionwire Send plugin on their Stereo Out channel. The remote end of the connection leaves the Sessionwire HQ Audio Destination set to their system playback device and they can immediately hear the Logic Pro X audio being streamed to them!

In this video, Brendan and Robin demonstrate three different ways of setting up Logic Pro X to stream audio both to a remote connection and back into Logic using the Sessionwire application and Sessionwire plugins. Sessionwire recommends using the first setup explained – simply placing the Sessionwire Send plugin on the Stereo Out channel of any Logic Session will allow for audio to be streamed to the remote connection.

A more advanced setup at the end of the video should only be used if the user does not have a webcam or must route all Talkback audio in and out of Logic.
